Cofnodion / Minutes – 27 February 2017

1 Feedback

Feedback regarding another successful anti-Trump rally, held in Bangor over the half-term (Monday 20 February).

Apparently the annual Cold Concert in the Cathedral (Friday 24 February) also went well, raising money for Bangor’s homeless.

2 Guantanamo fake history & the BBC

BBC R4 Today programme 23 February: Linda (in absentia) reported an interview with Charles ‘Cully’ Stimson (ex Pentagon, right-wing conservative thinktank the Heritage Foundation, Trump advisor). In it he claimed that Guantanamo prisoners were treated humanely with due process of law, as prisoners-of-war under the Geneva Convention. None of these ‘facts’ was true, yet the BBC interviewer did not challenge or question his assertions.

3 CND Cymru

Rhona reported that a donation to CND Cymru had been sent to their treasurer on Tuesday 21 February.

4 Bangor student’s deportation

We discussed the arrest and detention at Yarl’s Wood of Bangor University student Shiromini Satgunaraja, as she was about to sit her Electrical Engineering finals, in which she was expected to gain a first. She had come to the UK with her parents, as a Tamil refugee from Sri Lanka, in 2011, and granted leave to remain. Her father died, and she was currently appealing for her stay to be extended. Many thousands signed a petition for her to stay, and her case was raised in Westminster by Hywel Williams MP (Plaid Cymru).

He managed to get her extradition suspended last Tuesday, but the legal case continues, See https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2017/feb/28/deportation-student-halted-hours-board-plane

5 Brexit, Trump and the new far-right

A wide-ranging discussion was held about the emerging world order, about the links between the US administration, Farrage, LePen, Wilders and the like. Breitbart boss Robert Mercer directed his data-analytics fIrm CA to advise the Leave campaign.

The car companies conned us all. They’ve been selling us diesel vehicles that they claimed were the “green” choice.

But they lied. They manipulated emissions tests and sold us diesel cars that emit far more toxic fumes than they are supposed to. [1] As a result, they have made air pollution worse.

The only way to have clean…

    Your Plastic Footprint Shopping

    13th March 2017

Plastic is everywhere in our daily lives. I'm writing this on a computer with plastic parts, using a plastic keyboard powered through a plastic plug. You'll be reading this on something similar, or maybe on a plastic mobile phone.

Suggesting that people stop using plastic bank cards, plugs, contact lenses, medicine casings, biros, asthma inhalers, £5 notes or plasters (to…

Every year, an estimated 88 million tonnes of food is wasted across EU countries.
Meanwhile, 1 in 9 people worldwide struggle to find enough food to lead a healthy life. This is a scandal.

We need your voice to stop this outrageous inequality.
    Next week, European Parliament…

    You're needed - Greenpeace

    6th March 2017

After 5 weeks of campaigning, HSBC have just said that they'll stop funding rainforest destruction. It's amazing - but it's also an amazing opportunity to make sure other banks start cleaning up their act too. When our friends or peers do something good, it can often make us feel the pressure to do the same thing - and these banks reputations…
