John Carney Ireland 2016 106mins 12A Comedy/Drama/Music/Romance
A boy growing up in Dublin during the 1980s escapes his strained family life by starting a band to impress the mysterious girl he likes.
This is a lively, very humorous and engaging film, much enjoyed by our viewing panel. As we watch our hero come to terms with all that life throws at him, it's easy to imagine David Bowie or Iggy Pop facing up to the same challenges, each in their own special way. The period atmosphere is perfectly recalled (OK the 80s aren't that far back but still) and the soundtrack is excellent both in the choice of the popular hits and the band's own compositions.Great performances from the cast, a beautiful feel-good film with an edge.
